Thatchers Cider is holding a Family Open Day in Sandford on Saturday 5th September 2009. Starting at 11am and running until 3pm, the Thatchers Open Day is a great day out with something to appeal to all ages.
Normally held every two years, the 2008 Open Day was such a success with a record number of visitors attending, that the company has decided to hold a similar event this year.
Take a guided tour round Thatchers orchards to learn about different apple varieties, how they are harvested, soaking up the beauty and tranquillity of the Somerset countryside.
See how cider is made with tours around the cider mill, and talk to the experts who craft this traditional drink. September is of course the start of the harvest season, so see the apples begin their journey from the orchard to the bottle. Compare the old and the new – from Thatchers state of the art processing plant to their impressive 100 year old solid oak vats.
Finish the tour with a cider tasting and visit to the Thatchers shop, where you can buy cider straight from the barrel, and Thatchers full range of bottled ciders, as well as fresh meats, cheeses and chutneys.
For the younger generation there’ll be competitions, a bouncy castle, face painting, traditional barrel organ music, and dancing from the Mendip Morris Men.
There’ll be a barbecue and refreshments served throughout the day. Entry to the Thatchers Open day is free, with donations on the day going to Weston Hospice.
Martin Thatcher, Thatchers managing director, hopes the open day will attract many new visitors, “This is a great opportunity to look behind the doors and see how cider is made,” he says. “With the orchards full of apples this is one of the most attractive times of year to be visiting and we hope everyone gets as much pleasure from the day as we will.”
