The Space is a charitable organisation in the Cheddar Valley that is doing amazing work with young people, especially supporting mental health and emotional wellbeing. Their community of support offers vital services and activities to young people, including video and telephone counselling to 9-18 year olds; a community wellbeing allotment that is a safe space to use, with gardening a proven therapeutic tool to improve health; and in 2020 they piloted a physical Covid- safe youth club for 13 weeks, organised with partners Young Somerset, which moved to a virtual club during lockdown.
The Thatchers Foundation has provided a grant of £2,500 to The Space to help in their aim of turning their pilot youth club into one more permanent in Cheddar. With Young Somerset, they will be supporting 15 young people (that’s the maximum allowed under Covid rules, but will increase after), currently between ages 11 and 13. The youth club provides low level preventative intervention and activities to ensure young people can be active, connect and form relationships with each other and the community. In these difficult times, The Space is concerned with increasing anxiety, depression, relationships and suicidal intentions currently shown by local young people, concerns also reported by local schools. The invaluable work that The Space is carrying out includes community and school engagement, so that the voices of young people are heard.
