Chef Apprentice (Commis Chef)
Kitchen Level 2 Commis Chef
Who are Thatchers Cider?
Established in 1904 by William John Thatcher, we have grown into one of the top cider-making businesses in the world. Now in our fourth generation of family cider makers, we’re exceptionally proud of our Somerset roots.
We’ve experienced tremendous growth through industry-leading levels of investment in our marketing, people development, innovative technology and world-class cider mill. The best part? We’re just getting started.
We’re looking for a Commis Chef Apprentice to join us in the kitchen of our very own pub, the Railway Inn.
The Railway Inn Cider House and Restaurant is proud to deliver high quality, traditional style food and premium drinks, sourcing locally wherever possible. Our service and offering is attentive and well presented, just as we believe a pub at the heart of its community should be.
This is a busy environment and as an apprentice you will be a valuable part of the team, preparing fresh produce for the day’s service, working through orders, and plating up. We also hope that at some point you can take the lead on one our stations e.g., desserts or sauces.
Your Rewards and Benefits
- Above average apprenticeship wage – £6.80 per hour
- Benefits including discounts at our cider shop (over 18s only)
- Career progression and development in a growing, stable company
- Student discount card
Training and Development
We know it is a big decision to take your first steps in a career and at Thatchers we ensure that we give you all the training, support and development you need to succeed. What we ask in return is hard-work and trust and for you to share the same enthusiasm and passion for our business as we do.
As well as the training you will receive from our experienced team at The Railway Inn, you will also receive all of your apprenticeship training through The Academy of Food & Drink at Weston College, a unique training programme that will give young people access to high-quality kitchens, industry experts and invaluable insights.
The Academy of Food & Drink delivers all the training for the L2 Commis Chef Apprenticeship. As part of the Chef Academy, you will attend a blend of weekly masterclass and workshops at Weston College.
Who we’re looking for?

- A strong work ethic and can-do attitude
- A flare and passion to deliver high standards of food
- Someone with creativity and imagination
- Has high levels of personal hygiene
- Effective communication skills and enjoy working in a team
