Katy is crowned champion cider

Thatchers Single Variety Cider Katy has just been announced as the Champion Cider in the acclaimed annual Hereford Museum Cider and Perry Competition.

Katy came first in the category for single variety cider and also in the medium/sweet cider category, going on to take the title as Overall Champion Cider.

Katy is one of Thatchers’ favourite apples for making cider – in fact the 7.4% single variety cider was first crafted at Myrtle Farm almost twenty harvests ago. Now, thanks to the lasting popularity of Katy, the Somerset cider maker now has over 34 acres of its own orchard in Somerset alone dedicated solely to this bright red dessert apple.

Martin Thatcher, fourth generation cidermaker at Thatchers comments: “This is a fantastic accolade for our Katy cider. The competition is run by, and judged by, members of the cider industry, so for Katy to be named Champion, is high praise indeed.

“We’d like to thank the Hereford Museum for the award. We put our heart and soul into crafting our ciders here at Myrtle Farm. Katy is a beautiful, single variety Somerset cider and we’re thrilled the judges agreed and deemed it best in show.”

The Katy apple is one of the first of Thatchers apple varieties to come out into blossom, and the first to be harvested. It’s a beautiful, bright red apple – a cross between Worcester Pearmain and James Grieve – that looks magnificent on the trees. It has a perfect balance between acidity and sweetness allow the cidermakers to create a very crisp and refreshing cider.

Thatchers Katy is also a cider that makes a perfect pairing with food dishes. Crisp and refreshing it cleanses the palate, making it ideal with savoury and spicy flavours.

Thatchers has made a short film about the Katy harvest – it can be viewed here:
